As an Arab woman who suffered for three decades living under Islamic Sharia, it is clear to me that Islam’s political ideology and Sharia must be fought relentlessly by Western civilization to prevent its application in a free society.
However, I have found myself fighting on two fronts. The first front is against Islamists, a daunting fight indeed. But the other front is one shaped by too many uninformed individuals who like to view themselves as open minded “progressives”. They seem to somehow claim superiority on compassion, on peace, on open-mindedness and on appreciation of other cultures. Regarding themselves as tolerant, free thinking individuals, they avoid questioning Muslims’ harmful intentions. They restrict themselves to self-criticism, and make politically-correct excuses for Islamism. Regrettably, they show their indisputable acceptance of ‘others’ at the expense of the public’s responsibility to learn the truth about Islam’s detrimental tenets.
It is crucial for these so called “progressives” to realize that Islam is indeed based on an anti-liberal system. They need to awaken to the inhumane policies and practices of Islamists around the world. They need to realize that Islamism oppose the liberal values they cherish. And equally important, they must not take for granted the respect for human rights and dignity that we experience in
For me, confronting those who adhere to multicultural relativism is a most painful battle. Their standpoint makes the efforts of Muslim reformers more challenging. When Westerners make politically-correct excuses for Islamism, it actually suppresses and weakens my voice and that of others who are in this fight.
Simply put, too many individuals, and institutions stand in the way of overcoming Islamic political ideology. With their appeasing approach they obstruct the pressing effort to modernize Islam.
When I first immigrated to the
Regrettably, we frequently experience politically correct harsh responses to criticism of Islam by those who admonish liberated Muslims or Arabs. They often use clichés such as, “There are violent stories in all religions texts,” or “How can we bulk all Muslims into one group?” Or, “Among Christians and Jews there are also zealots who have done horrible things to others.” All of these excuses are made without considering critical Islamic doctrines which play detrimental role in Islam’s march towards Western decline.
Two years ago Rabbi Stephen Julius Stein published an article in the Los Angeles Times criticizing me in an unjust manner. Recently Rabbi’s Stein article came back to life when an Arab man who happens to follow my writings translated the Rabbi’s article into Arabic and published it in an Arabic website under the title “A Jewish Rabbi scandalizes Wafa Sultan”.
Among other claims, Mr. Stein mentioned that he could not imagine a “Jewish woman standing among a group of Muslims and criticizing Judaism the same way Wafa Sultan criticizes Islam”.
Is Mr. Stein lacking basic knowledge about Islam and demonstrating duplicity in regard to his own Jewish religion?
Here are few hypothetic scenarios:
If a group of fanatic Jews beheaded an innocent Muslim, justifying their gruesome act as permissible according to Jewish texts, is there any doubt that countless of Jewish women would publicly criticize the tenets of Judaism that permit these outrageous creeds?
Had Jewish women been relegated to the status of animals as a result of their religious teachings, would one doubt Rabbi Stein’s obvious support for Jewish women rebelling against their own traditions?
Recently, a well known Egyptian female lawyer called on national Arabic TV, to incite young Palestinian men to harass and rape Israeli women as part of their war against Israel (you can view her clip on MEMRI.org).
Had an Israeli lawyer declared publicly on a National Israeli TV the same type of incitement against Arabs, would Rabbi Stein object to Jewish women’s unequivocal rejection of this hateful provocation?
Also, I am quite amazed at Rabbi Stein’s ignorance of the intrinsic nature of Islamic anti-Semitism. One would assume that his obligation as a teacher and a leader of his Jewish community is to educate and protect his people. Unfortunately, his criticism only weakens Jews, and further strengthens Muslim anti-Semitism. (Please read Dr.
One Islamic concept in particular is called in Arabic “Al Taqyya.” It allows and encourages Muslims to lie and deceive others in order to reach their ultimate objective which is submitting the world to Islam under Sharia Law. To be sure, Islamists who follow the political ideology of subverting non Muslims under Islam do use the concept of Al Taqyyaa.
Hence, a destructive relationship is created: on one hand, Islamists lie to the gullible non - Muslims and on the other hand, many non Muslims, in particular proponents of interfaith dialogue accept their lies and avoid asking harsh and necessary questions to expose their dangerous intentions. In that context, the Muslims’ Al Taqyyaa and the West’s naiveté and ignorance about the true intentions of Islamists are both harmful models of engagement.
Further, they both violate our right to know the truth, regardless of how evil or unintentional each side’s objective is. Thus, Al Taqyyaa and political correctness are recipes for irreversible damage to the values of freedom and liberty, which are the foundation of our
Rabbi Stein is one in a group of countless others who practice political correctness to avoid hurting those he claimed to be “his Muslim friends,” as he mentions in his article.
People who avoid facing the gloomy facts regarding Islam, have no moral authority to admonish liberated Arabs like me. Those who cannot confront Islamic doctrine boldly and will not allow themselves to question openly dreadful components of Islam are on the wrong side of this conflict.
I have often been asked to soften and compromise my message. I refuse to do so. I believe the way to solve this Islamic predicament is to highlight and confront it in a most truthful and subsequently painful manner. As we all would agree, at times, an acute disease must be treated aggressively rather than with a benign medicine like Aspirin.
Lastly, I will carry on my mission because I love Muslims. I dream of a future when all Muslims, especially from the Middle East, who yearn for better life outside their suppressive environment, can savor the taste of the freedom we all experience here in the

Please accept my appreciation to Dr. Sultan for her courageous stand. She as well as Ms. Gabriel and several other muslim women are at the forefront of the battle against fundamentalist muslims who are a threat to western civilization. The Rabbi is probably most concerned with pandering to his arab friends and angling for an invitation to the White House. In no way does he represent the majority of Jews who appreciate these real heroines. Please continue the good fight. God bless you. Bernie Shuster, Montreal, Canada.
As I grow older, I've become more and more awed by the courage of Muslim women like Wafa Sultan. I don't know anything about Rabbi Stein, but I have met many Jews like him. As a Jew myself, I am appalled by Jews who think as he does. Multiculturalism is something one should out grow as one grows older. No idea should be given a pass just because some person or society thinks it is right.
Wafa Sultan's appearance on Al Jazeera amazed me. She knew full well the possible outcome of her remarks, and yet she made them before the entire world. Perhaps, people like Rabbi Stein don't have any concept of the pressure that keeps Muslim girls and women in line, or that they actually are dominated by strict rules and taboos imposed upon them, not freely chosen. Perhaps that is why he cannot understand how heroic Ms. Sultan is.
Women like her offer all of us hope.
Keep it up Wafa Sultan, u r doing a great job educating the infidels about the dangers of Islam. Pray, the politicians who control the west and the rest of the free world open their eyes to the dangers of this crazy cult soon.
This is an excellent article. Please keep up your good work. America is a better place now that you are here to help in the fight against mental slavery. Thank you for your courage and willingness to speak out.
Wafa ROCKS !
She is a Woman surrounded by sheeple and hate.
She knows the cancer that must be fought and conquired.
Bravo. Your intellectual honesty just astounds me as does your courage. I can't begin to express the respect I have for you as a person, a human being.
I, thank you for your courage and great articles.
Well said - Wafa.
When two sides share common principles and goals, and there is a disagreement between these two sides, It is the side that most consistently practices its principles that wins the disagreement, and both sides benefit toward the shared principle.
For two sides that hold opposing or opposite principles and goals, if there is any compromise between the two sides it is the more evil of the two sides that benefits and gains a victory. ALWAYS.
Thank you Ms. Sultan for having the moral strength to not compromise your principles which are rational and therefore good.
Dear Wafa Sultan
I am a Caucasian Australian (and a non-believer!) and I refuse to submit to the silent evil that is cultural relativism. I consider myself to be quite liberal in many areas, not just politics. I hold a point of view not dissimilar to your own but sadly, as a guest in a majority muslim country (in fact, the largest muslim population in the world, Indonesia), I must keep my views to myself lest someone react negatively. I have many friends here, of many different faiths and demographics and I have only stated to one person before my belief that what's missing from the "inter-faith discourse" is a willingness for muslims to criticise the actions of other muslims. The person I told this to, himself a muslim, surprisingly agreed with me.
By a willingness to criticise, I certainly do not mean that the muslim world should appear fractious but really, some self-reflection is in order. I just realised that I'm not comfortable with the phrase "the muslim world." I generally don't think of "the buddhist world" when discussing Thailand or Cambodia, so why do so many countries have their unique identities subsumed by phrases such as "the muslim world?" Notice the phrase "the Western world." I'm happy not to be defined by a religion.
Thank you for a genuinely interesting article. I wish you all the best for your struggle to help clarify the realities in which we find ourselves.
Dear Dr Sultan,
I can not appreciate enough your hard and courageous towards bringing sanity to our part of the world, a daunting task indeed.
It is commonly assumed that soft approach is the "better" approach, yet in societies where negotiations and exchange of ideas take place through the barrel of gun or the edge of sword, there is hardly any, any room for a "soft" approach.
Any change, any improvement that has to come this part of the world has to be from within and through educating the masses. It will be slow and difficult but it is a possibility. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Keep up the hard work.
Best Regards

Thank you for a good article. When American leaders buy into the "Islam is the religion of peace" nonsense and spread that message to our citizens, it is no wonder that so many believe it. After the terrorist attacks on 9/11/01, President Bush made it very clear that Islam is the religion of peace and that it was simply some angry, disenfranchised Muslims who had attacked us. Now, we have a president who apologizes to Muslims for Americas mistreatment of them, forgetting that American soldiers have fought and died to liberate Muslims; who tells the "Muslim world" that America is not a Christian nation while, unbelievably, claiming that Muslims have helped in the founding and the freedoms of America. (Obama is truly an un-informed, ignorant of history idiot if he actually believes that garbage.)And one who celebrates Muslim religious practices while disparaging the Judeo-Christian heritage of America. Indeed, your job is made more difficult by morally deficient self-serving loons. God bless you for refusing to stop.
Dear Waffa,
Thanks for a great article. You have touched on a major challange people who understand Islam and live in the west face with these so called liberal progressive thinkers who usually label people who criticise Islam as Islamaphopic. What is really also shocking is the number of these people in influential areas and positions such as the media (e.g. the BBC) who favour Islam and have a hostile attitude towards other beliefs; especially chrisianity. I fail to understand how these people are so blinded to the real threat of Islam, first and foremost to their own way of thinking and life, and to all humanity.
The other obstacle in my opinion to liberating Muslims are western governments, politicians and financiers who appease muslim countries to keep their wealth flowing. They worship money rather than God and will do anything to keep it coming. Their reliance on oil from the middle east and Islamic countries have prevented them from long addressing the evil ideology of Islam. Humanity is waiting for the day when alternative energy will remove this reliance on oil and will leave it to the Saudis to drink it instead of using its revenues to spread the evil teachings of Islam.
I am looking forward to your book and future articles. God bless you.
Ghada.
i always had a mistrust of those who believe
they are above question, it is the most ant-liberal stand you can take. i remember in my cuontry when the catholic church was all powerful, how corrupt and arrogant they became.
to days liberals now feel their positions are above question and i see how arrogant and conceited they have become. it is like watching catholic bishops of the past or hateful mullahs of today. the west will never learn, and the crisis is always on them before they realise they must act.
Bravo to Dr. Wafa Sultan! She has again "hit the nail on the head". My admiration goes out to this brave lady. Keep up the good work.
Wafa Sultan is a truly liberated and transformed lion hearted warrior of light with a mission to enlighten and set free the blind followers of the darkest cult ever brought upon humanity by a handful of lost nomads.
Isn't 1400 years of atrocities and crimes against humanity evidence and proof enough for her assertions?
Wake up those of you who consider yourselves as liberal and humane, or the dark cloud of Islam will spread its shadow on your civilizations as it did on my Persian culture of freedom, joy, and creativity 1400 years ago. Islamist will use your liberal views to defeat yourselves.
WAKE UP AND LISTEN TO THE WAFA SULTANs AND MASSOUD ANSARI OF OUR TIMES.
Chere Waffa Sultan
I hope and pray everyday for the real peace,
with all the arabs people, with you waffa
ther is hope 1day in this planete ,
God bless you Waffa Sultan .
Dear Dr. Wafa Sultan, thank You for your courageous article. I am a Swedish Missionary (PhD in Theology)working in Kinshasa RDC as Professor of African theology at the Université Chrétienne de Kinshasa. From my students I hear testimonies about Muslim traders and merchants engaging young Christian male adults in Lower Congo (Where youth un-employment is soaring!)saying: "Convert to Islam and we will employ You!". Numerous young men are converting (for money) and are being trained, not only to trade, but also to harass, threaten and commit crimes in the name of Islam. I do agree with You that many in the "west" are painfully ignorant of muslim "mission and expansion"-activities. Thus, I pray that God will support You and give You strength in Your work!
I am an 80-year-old grandmother. In 1950, I married a survivor of the Shoah. Thanks to my husband's support - economic and philosophical,I earned a Master's Degree in French and Spanish Literature and a B.A. in Education. Thanks to his support, I enjoyed a 30-year career as a secondary school teacher. I retired with a generous pension which enables us to enjoy our retirement. My friends and I admire your courage, your honesty, and your integrity! We wish you good health and every success in bringing your message to the attention of the free world.
Dear Wafa Sultan,
I just want to say that you are constantly in my prayers. You are one of the bravest people in the world. May G-d keep you safe.
